OLY08 RUDD (CANBERRA)

Chinese officials have warned they won't tolerate any protests during tomorrow night's
opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games

Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD is on his way to Beijing .. where he's promised to raise
human rights issues during the games.

He'll be at the official opening ceremony but will also meet with China's premier WEN
JIABAO and President HU JINTAO.

Meantime .. The International Olympic Committee has identified 71 fraudulent websites
offering tickets to the public.

It comes after three women and two men were charged yesterday with the unauthorised
sale of tickets for the Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong.



MURRAY WONG (CANBERRA)

The federal opposition has compared water minister PENNY WONG to SADDAM HUSSEIN over
her handling of the crisis in the Murray Darling Basin.

Opposition water spokesman GREG HUNT made the comment in relation to the unfolding
ecological crisis in South Australia's wetlands and lower lakes .. which are at the mouth
of the ailing river system.

MR HUNT's told the ABC PENNY WONG and prime minister KEVIN RUDD are set to join SADDAM
HUSSEIN and the Ba'athists of Baghdad .. as only the second government in the world to
have presided over the destruction of a RAMSAR-listed wetland.



CLIMATE CLAUSE (SYDNEY)

Electricity companies intend to pass on any extra costs from a move to an emissions
trading scheme .. despite receiving federal government compensation.

Fairfax newspapers say clauses for carbon adjustment are now being added to future
electricity supply contracts .. and an environmental lobby group says the move will also
see the coal-fired sector pass costs of tackling climate change to consumers.

JEFF ANGEL from the Total Environment Centre says the message for the government is
DON'T give the coal-fired generators any subsidies.



IEMMA (SYDNEY)

Premier MORRIS IEMMA says he doesn't expect to be punished by his own party when he
fronts a committee of New South Wales Labor Party heavyweights today.

Mr IEMMA's attending a meeting of the state ALP's administrative committee to explain
his rationale for defying the party .. and pushing ahead with the privatisation of the
electricity sector.

It follows a committee resolution in June .. which said Mr IEMMA'S actions constituted
the most serious threat to the party's set-up since the 1930s.



TRIPLE (MELBOURNE)

Giant B-triple trucks could soon be allowed on Victorian roads under a state government
plan to cut road congestion.

The trucks .. a prime mover towing three trailers .. can weigh up to 82 tonnes and
are up to 36 metres long.

News limited says the Victorian government is examining whether the trucks are the
answer to reducing traffic congestion and bottlenecks in the freight system.



LEAGUE WILLIAMS (SYDNEY)

SONNY BILL WILLIAMS will today finally reveal why he walked out on his Bulldog teammates
when he appears on Channel Nine's Footy Show.

In an extract from tonight's interview WILLIAMS says former coach STEVE FOLKES was
at the centre of his decision to take up a rugby contract with Toulon.

He says he was angered when FOLKES questioned his friendship with boxer ANTHONY MUNDINE
and asked whether he was turning Muslim .. and admits to being unhappy at the club for
some time.



GUANTANAMO HAMDAN GUILTY (GUANTANAMO BAY)

Military jurors have found OSAMA BIN LADEN'S former driver guilty of providing material
support to terrorism in the first US war crimes trial since World War II.

But the jury found SALIM HAMDAN not guilty on a count of conspiracy .. in the first
case before the special tribunals created by President GEORGE W BUSH.
