Vic: Melbourne crowds cheer Rudd,. boo Nelson

Thousands of people have turned their backs on BRENDAN NELSON .. as they gathered in
Melbourne's Federation Square to watch a live broadcast of today's apology to the stolen
generations.

After KEVIN RUDD said the words .. "I am sorry" .. the crowd .. many hugging children
and wrapped in Aboriginal flags .. erupted in applause and cheers.

But as the opposition leader gave his response .. the crowd booed .. and then turned
their backs on Dr NELSON halfway through his speech.

The broadcast was introduced by acting premier ROB HULLS .. who said the states and
territories apologised many years ago .. and today's speech by the Prime Minister closed
the circle.
