Because they caught his convoy of guerrilla fighters re-entering Afghanistan, he is evidence of the success of new Soviet tactics emphasizing raids and ambushes to disrupt resistance operations.
But they failed to kill him. And Gul's determination to return to the fight is a manifestation of the indomitable will that has confounded would-be conquerors of Afghanistan for more than 2,000 years.
