HOT TOPICMalone left out in the cold

The man accustomed to working the pick-and-roll has become someonenot picked with no role.

Poor Karl Malone.

The Utah Jazz forward said last week he had no desire to carry theOlympic torch "across the desert somewhere for a tenth of a mile. ...Running into the Olympic stadium, now that means something."

Something he won't be doing at the opening ceremonies for theWinter Games that begin Feb. 8 in Salt Lake City.

Karl will not be part of the opening ceremonies," Salt LakeOrganizing Committee spokeswoman Caroline Shaw told the Deseret News.

Nor was he ever considered for participating in the openingceremonies.

Malone might carry the torch along the way, Shaw said, with theSLOC talking to Malone's agent, Dwight Manley, about the possibility.Manley said last week Malone would carry the torch in the openingceremonies after receiving it from teammate John Stockton.

If letters to the editor are any indication, the public wouldn'tmiss him. He got torched in e-mails to the Deseret News: Malone is aprima donna." Shame on Karl Malone." Stop pampering Malone."

If not the torch relay, perhaps Malone could participate in a longwalk off a short pier.
